Shawna is a California native living in a North Carolina world. She is a San Diego State University alum and continued her education with a MA in Education from Eastern Oregon University. After completing school and living in various cities along the west coast, she taught for 5 years in inner-city Phoenix, Arizona schools before moving with her husband and two young children to Raleigh in 2007, where she taught first and second grades in Wake County Public Schools for 9 years. She was Science lead teacher for 7 of those years, supporting teachers in grades k-5 with implementing and integrating Science in their classrooms. She has a passion for making learning real-world and relevant to her students! She completed her American Montessori Society certification in 2012 and taught lower elementary for many years at a public Montessori Magnet School. She is certified in both elementary education (grades K-6) and middle grades Mathematics (grades 6-9) and is a National Board Certified Teacher. Continuing her pursuit of life-long learning, in 2016, she made the switch to Middle School! This year, she's back in second grade with these amazing little people! When she's not at school, she's making memories with her husband of 20 years and 2 children, Sammy, a junior at Research Triangle High School and Sophia, a freshman at Wake Early College of Health and Science! Two dogs, two turtles and a hedgehog add the spice to her life! They spend their free time attending sporting events and theater productions and enjoying the sun and the sand at the beach!
